There’s always a chance of pregnancy when you are sexually active, even when you would least expect to become pregnant. However, it’s helpful information to know for understanding your reproductive health and cycle. Keep reading for more information.

When You are Least Likely to Be Pregnant
If you’ve recently been sexually active, starting your period is usually the best indicator that you are not pregnant. The first day of your period is considered Day 1 of your cycle, and the week of your period is also when you are least fertile and least likely to become pregnant.
Additionally, a few days after you’ve ovulated and are at the very end of your cycle, you are also least likely to get pregnant. For most women, this can be from 20 days into their cycle until their period starts again.
Learning about your cycle and fertility windows is essential for understanding when you are least likely to be pregnant or get pregnant.
Understanding Fertility Windows
Your fertility window is the time you are most likely to become pregnant.
While each woman’s body is unique, the typical time of peak fertility for a woman is the five days leading up to ovulation, the day of ovulation, and the few days following.
This wide range of days is the result of how long male sperm can survive, which is usually 3-5 days after sex, as well as how long an egg remains viable after ovulation (typically 12-24 hours).
Your body produces indicators to signal when you are ovulating (such as cervical mucus and changes in basal body temperature), and many women use these to track their fertility window. Other women simply track their periods and estimate based on the number of days in their cycle.
If you are sexually active, though, it is important to know that no method will definitely prevent pregnancy. Even using birth control and/or tracking your fertility is not a guarantee that you won’t get pregnant.
