Signs of Infection After Abortion

Signs of infection after an abortion include:
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge: Bleeding is usual after an abortion, but if the discharge begins to have a foul odor, it can be an indication of an infection.
- Heavy Bleeding: An increase in bleeding can be another warning sign of an infection after an abortion. Bleeding through two pads in an hour following a medical abortion, or one pad in an hour following a surgical abortion, can indicate that you need to seek medical intervention.
- Fever: Another sign of a post-abortive infection is developing a fever after a surgical abortion, or having a fever that remains for more than 1 or 2 days after a medical abortion.
- Severe cramping or pain: Cramping and abdominal discomfort after an abortion are expected, but if the cramping or pain intensifies after the procedure, it can be an indication that an infection is present. Keep in mind that worsening back pain can be another sign that something is wrong and requires medical intervention.
Track Your Symptoms
Pay attention to what your body is telling you and the symptoms you are feeling. For example, is the bleeding getting better or worse, or is the pain level becoming milder or stronger? You can also check your temperature twice a day to see if a fever is remaining or getting worse.
Remember that ultimately you know your body best. Trust yourself and seek medical help if you suspect something is not right. Even if the symptoms seem random or come and go, it’s essential not to ignore your concerns.

Your medical provider can examine you, perform ultrasound scans, and order laboratory tests to determine whether you have an infection or other health complications. Using this information, they will develop a treatment plan with you and schedule a follow-up appointment.
